# Ori Alpha Release: Compiled Systems Language

Elucidsoft releases the alpha of Ori, an LLVM-compiled systems language combining value semantics, deterministic ARC, and capability-based effects.

Elucidsoft is pleased to announce the public alpha release of **Ori** (`ori-lang`), a statically typed, expression-based systems programming language compiled through LLVM to standalone native binaries on Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Ori is designed around a singular technical thesis: **Functional Code, Imperative Speed, Native Binaries**, eliminating the traditional compromise between unpredictable garbage collection pauses and complex borrow-checker annotations.

## The memory model

Most modern programming languages force developers to accept distinct memory management trade-offs:

- **Garbage-collected runtimes (Go, Java, JavaScript)** provide convenience at the expense of runtime pauses, high memory overhead, and unpredictable latency.
- **Borrow checkers (Rust)** eliminate runtime overhead but introduce lifetime annotations and significant cognitive friction.
- **Manual allocation (C, C++)** risks use-after-free, double-free, and memory corruption bugs.

Ori implements a unique model: **Automatic Reference Counting (ARC) with strict Value Semantics**. Every variable logically owns its data, assignment functions as a logical copy, and shared mutable state is prohibited by language design. Reference cycles are prevented at compile time rather than through weak references or background cycle detectors.

## Eight optimization layers

To make pure value semantics fast without redundant copies, Ori’s compiler stacks eight compounding optimization layers:

1. **Scalar elision**: Scalars (integers, booleans, small value structs) bypass reference counting entirely, eliminating overhead for roughly half of typical program variables.
2. **Read-only parameter inference**: Whole-module call graph analysis detects parameters that are only read, skipping reference counting at every call site.
3. **In-place buffer mutation**: When a buffer or collection is uniquely owned, functional transformations (such as `items.iter().filter().map().collect()`) are automatically transformed into in-place mutations without intermediate allocations.
4. **LLVM code generation**: Directly produces optimized native executables with no virtual machine or runtime dependencies to bundle.

## Try Ori

Ori is experimental and currently at version `2026.7.28-alpha.1`, dual-licensed under MIT and Apache-2.0. The compiler is written in Rust.

Developers and systems programmers can explore the language documentation, view code examples, and experiment in the interactive browser playground at [ori-lang.com](https://ori-lang.com).
